Why do we share the gospel? It is not to earn brownie points with God, for we have seen through this series that we can’t earn God’s favor. So what is the motivation behind sharing the good news of Jesus with a lost and dying world? There are several great reasons such as love for God and what he has done or love for others and a burden for their souls, but one stands out above the rest.
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
We are to step out of our comfort zone and face a world that is hostile to the things of God so that He might be glorified. There is no greater driving force for the Christian in what they do and say than to bring glory to the One who has done so much for them. He is Our Maker, Our Redeemer, Our Provider and He is worthy of all glory, honor, and praise.
What does it mean to evangelize to the glory of God? It means to speak and act in a way that brings God praise, honor, and worship. There are a couple of ways that we can glorify God in our witnessing encounters.
1. Making sure our conduct is beyond reproach.
When we go share the gospel with the world, we are, in a way, representatives of God. People are looking at us to learn about God. Often, they are looking at us to find justification for their rebellion and disobedience. What do they leave with when we are being hateful, prideful, or vulgar in our conduct? They leave with a sense of self – satisfaction in their hatred for the God they refuse to bow their knee to. Let's give man no excuse to do that. Let's have them remember us as loving and bold witnesses for Jesus Christ.
2. Exalting God and His word throughout our conversations
In a sermon, John MacArthur stated, “By enhancing His name, by exalting His name, by lifting up His name, by praising His name, by honoring His name, we give Him glory in the eyes of the world.“ We give Him glory when we lift Him up in our conversations. How do we speak to others about God? Do we bring Him glory by exalting Him above everything else, even ourselves? Do we show through our words our deep love for God? Let us strive to make God preeminent above everything else, because He is.
How about God's Word? Are we upholding the Scriptures in evangelism, using it as our authority for life? We are not bringing glory to God when we try and manipulate someone into the kingdom or use worldly methods to try and gain a convert. We need to evangelize according to God's Word and not the latest marketing techniques. We need to show others that we view the Bible as precious and vital to our lives.
Let's make sure in any witnessing encounter that it is God who is praised, who gets the credit for any good thing. He is the only one worthy of praise. May God bless you as you strive to bring glory to His name through the proclamation of His word concerning His Son Jesus for the sake of winning souls.
