When sharing the gospel with the lost, there are so many tools and tips that one could give to help one in engaging someone in a spiritual conversation about their eternity. One of the best tools I believe we have at our disposal is God’s Word. It should be dominant in any witnessing encounter as it is the only words we will use that have any real weight. It is God’s word that is able to penetrate a hardened sinner’s heart and bring conviction of sin, not a long-winded, well-researched argument. Studying the Bible daily can make it easier to refer to verses in your witnessing conversations.
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12-13)
It is the final authority on all matters…
People do not need our opinions. They need the truth of God’s Word. Do not shy away from using it. Pastor Voddie Baucham (if you’ve never heard him preach, pause from this article and youtube him!) talks about the foolishness of us having a sword in battle and laying it down to fight. My husband has said before that no one has been saved by losing an argument.
“Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17, emphasis added)
We need to proclaim what God’s Word says. We need to show them in the Bible how greatly depraved man is and how merciful God is to have sent His only begotten Son to pay the penalty that we all so deserve. We need to proclaim, from Scripture, man’s need for repentance and to turn to Jesus in faith.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16, emphasis added)
When we resort to arguments alone and downplay Scripture, we are saying, by our actions, that God’s Word isn’t enough. We have to make it more palatable so that others will be convinced that our way is the right way. God’s Word is more than enough.
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; (Psalm 19:7-8)
How did the men of the Bible approach sinners? Jesus himself approached them with the truth of God’s Word. He quoted the Old Testament Scriptures, often to show them their sin and hypocrisy. Peter preached God’s Word after Pentecost in Acts 2. Paul states in his first letter to Corinth:
And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.(1 Corinthians 2:1-5, emphasis added)
Even in the Old Testament, the prophets came not to deliver their own messages but to declare what God had said. Scripture has always been the dominant factor in evangelism with men of God from the beginning.
Remember sisters, that God’s word is precious and powerful. Be bold and proclaim it when speaking to someone about their eternity. It is your greatest tool and strongest weapon.
